Mine is Gorgeous, Jonas Armstrong, Irish actor of my occasional aquantence. I have it because he stars in one of my favourite back to childhood telly adventures of recent years, it was a toss up between him and David Tennent who up until recently starred in the other one. But I've never met David Tenent.

I know it's rather late in the day but, I just watched an episode of Who Do You Think You Are. Dervla Kirwin, recorded August 2nd BBC1.

What the HELL was that all about?

The first half hour was spent examining an excerpt from the history of the IRA.

I know they look into historic events relevant to the persons life, but that was just ridiculously over the top.

No real examination of Dervla's genealogy for the first half of the show. She knew that one of the founders of the IRA was her great great (etc) uncle, so they just concentrated on that.

One shot was of Dervla and an Irishman (NOT James Nesbitt, unusually) standing in a field with Dervla saying how beautiful it is and the camera operator not even bothering to give us a wide shot.

What a pile of pooh that show was.

Anybody watch the 5 part BBC drama, 'The Deep'? It starred the eternally gorgeous Minnie Driver, and James 'face like a slapped Irishman' Nesbitt.

Well it was the final episode this week. Closing scene: Picture it, a beach. waves crashing in the background. A twelve year old girl stand at the surf edge, looking out to sea, deep in thought. A woman approaches from the rear. It is the girl's mother. Everyone thought the mother was dead. She had been lost at sea in a submarine accident, several months before. So, mother has not seen daughter for months, and thought she may never see her again. Daughter thought mum was dead.

You have the picture, yes? S, what does mother do? Surely she runs up to the daughter, calling out her name, crying, laughing, she picks up the daughter and swirls her around, more hugging, crying, and smiling from both. Surely?

Well, no. It seems she should approach daughter and stand about twelve metres away, then, stoney faced, demand her daughter comes to her. Daughter doesn't want to, Mother insists. They both look earnestly at each other. Then the mother kind of mentions that the girl's dad is now dead. In a vague sort of way.

What bell hooks, as the two Ronnies would say.

Industry awards are often essentially closed questions. Like, 'who's the best out of these four actors?' Why only those four actors? Why not the ten thousand others? Because that's ridiculously impractical, that's why.

Still, if we DO have to have these closed question candidacies, why do we sometimes get bizarre genre candidates? By which I mean things like this year's Emmys, where Edie Falco, star of US medical drama 'Nurse Jackie', was presented with the award for the best Comedy actress. IT'S NOT A COMEDY AND SHE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY!

Why do they do that? In the UK counterpart, a couple of years ago 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' won the best comedy award. What the hell?

Next thing we know they'll be giving soaps awards for best drama, or a comedy award to 'My Family'!
